Conversations from Room 1170 (The Battery Powered Sessions)

Written over a six year period, along with its companion book of the same name, Conversations from Room 1170 is a concept album that chronicles the struggle to find treatment for Dave's rare heart disease, the four year wait for a donor heart, his implantation of a total artificial heart for nine months to survive, and the many hospitalizations, moves, and dangers he and his family faced along the way. While the music is driving and melodic, it has an urgency that expresses the anxiety and uncertainty that they experienced throughout the journey. From the frantic "Boston" about the initial diagnosis, to the stomping harmonies of "Indestructible" in which he loses a fellow patient and friend, from the anthemic "Requiem for a Savior" written to his donor, to the angry "All Go Down," raging against his disease, losses, and the effects of PTSD, the album is at once heavy and melodic, driving yet soaring, and compelling without derivation or sappiness. Each song is based on events and thoughts from the corresponding book chapter, and the two serve as true companions to one another; a glimpse into the world of fatal illness and transplant for the well, a guidebook and light for those walking their own painful road.
