East Side Girls Carry Knives

East Side Girls Carry Knives

Hand-crafted in what Forbes Magazine calls the hipster capital of the world, 'East Side Girls Carry Knives' is the first release from Los Angeles based progressive-instrumental outfit Virgil. Despite the hip locale from which the music was brewed, you won't find Virgil on any record players owned by fedora-wearing, mustached-bearing twenty-somethings. In fact, 'East Side Girls Carry Knives' is a high energy, instrumental, progressive rock album that is reminiscent of Animals As Leaders, Steven Wilson, Chimp Spanner, and Dream Theater.

"Overdrive (The Harmonist)" is a fast-paced power anthem that should be played loudly in a car while ignoring the speed limit. "Impostor Syndrome" instrumentally acknowledges the psychological phenomenon in which people are unable to internalize their accomplishments. Finally, "East Side Girls Carry Knives" - the 6 minute 27 second title track whose name pokes fun at the irony of once-gritty hipster neighborhoods - is perhaps the most dynamic and theatrical piece on the album.
