For me this record functions as a scrapbook, representing the styles and experiences had by me over the past decade or so of my career, whether in South Africa, Malawi, or the U.S. The music is raw and rootsy one minute and refined and worldy the next - but that’s been my life. The lyrics are typically autobiographical and thus I found great reward in stepping outside of my instrumental background and singing them myself. Stylistically the album is hard to pin down, but, roots rock, Afro-pop, and jazz are represented pretty consistently throughout. There are two tracks with debut performances from MC Footnote and The Professor, and represent my desire to experiment by fusing hip-hop with my own brand of quirky Afrobeat and jazz. Overall it’s an honest snapshot of what I wanted to create musically. I went into the studio with neither restraints nor expectations and this is what I came up with.
